Most lighting calls are not new installs, they are something that stopped working right. The far end went dim, a section died, the colors are off, or the whole run quit after a storm. A lot of it traces back to power and connections rather than the lights themselves.
Dim far end and shifted colors
This is the classic one. Voltage drops as it travels down a long run, so the far end gets less than it needs. White starts looking pink or yellow and everything gets dim.
The fix is power injection, feeding power in at additional points so the whole run gets what it needs.
Dead sections
Usually a bad connection, a cut wire, or a failed node. On addressable runs a single failed node can take out everything downstream of it, because the data has to pass through each node to reach the next.
Storm and corrosion damage
Wind is usually what takes lights down here, and salt air finishes off anything brittle or poorly sealed. The joints between cords and strands are the weak point, so those get reinforced and protected rather than just reconnected.

Why is the far end of my run dim or the wrong color?
Classic voltage drop. The far pixels are starving, so whites go amber and colors drift. The fix is power injection, feeding power in at additional points along the run, and it is a known, solvable job.
It is also the single most common flaw in DIY builds we see.
One section went dark. Is the whole thing shot?
Almost never. Pixels pass data down the line, so a failed pixel or a corroded connector takes out everything after it while the rest runs fine. The repair is finding that node and replacing the segment or the connector, not replacing the system. Sudden half-run failures are usually one bad joint.
Can you fix a system somebody else installed?
Usually. DIY and open systems are fully serviceable by anyone competent. Some installed brands lock their controllers to the original dealer, which is worth knowing before you buy one, and even then the hardware side, bad segments, connectors, and power, can generally be diagnosed and repaired locally.
